Isinglass is a substance obtained from the dried swim bladders of fish.
Why is Isinglass in my wine?
Isinglass in form of collagen is used mainly for the clarification or fining of some beer and wine. It can also be cooked into a paste for specialized gluing purposes. It is primarily used to clear white wines. Gelatin and isinglass both need to be used sparingly to prevent residual traces remaining in the wine due to their potency. This is a big shock for many because when we think of wines, we think grapes not gross things like fish bladders to be used when producing our wines!
In the United States, it is not required that alcohol labels disclose ingredients on their label even major allergens. So sometimes it may not be the sulfites in wine that may make you sick but the fish ingredients that are used that interferes due to your allergies to fish.
