When we arrived at the Pandolfi Price vineyard in the Itata Valley, we felt so at peace. Nature was so colorful, so beautifully untouched. Or maybe it was their adorable dog that came to greet us. Or both! We just knew that the feeling of this place was magical right when we arrived. Then Enzo Pandolfi came to take us on a tour of their estate, and that is when the magic really began…

Pandolfi Price

Enzo started by sharing with us the family history of this lovely place on the north riverbank of the Larqui River. When they moved here in 2002, the land happened to have vineyards of dry-farmed Chardonnay and very old País grapes already planted. That was enough to get started! Today Pandolfi Price produces beautiful wines rated highly by James Suckling.

At Pandolfi Price, they practice what they call “Raisonne” agriculture, in which the focus is being as sustainable as possible regarding everything they do at the estate. They never follow recipes or flood the vineyards with chemicals, and they walk the grounds a lot, observing and evaluating the conditions – only acting when it’s strictly necessary. A large portion of the products used in the vineyard are natural microorganisms, so they do no harm to the environment.  Pandolfi Price is also planning to install a photovoltaic energy generation plant in the estate that will supply as much as 70% of their energy, an investment that will help them to get closer to a carbon footprint of zero.

Your wine is vegan. What sort of techniques or fining agents do you use for the fining and/or clarification process since you don't use animal products? What made you choose to avoid animal products? Is that important to you?

For some wines, we do not fine at all. The fining comes naturally during the aging process; using the passage of time and the temperatures of the season, the job is taken care of. For other wines, we use cold stabilization or synthetic products.  We do not use animal-based products because we want our wines to be as pure and sustainable as possible. Using those sorts of consumables tends to take away part of that purity. But mainly we do not like them because of where they come from and the mistreatment and abuse that some animals have to go through to produce them.

Remember to join us on Instagram on Fridays for more of our Meet the Winemaker series!

There are many reasons Vegan Wines creates partnerships with winemakers besides their amazing, naturally vegan wines. Veganism is not just what we eat, but who we are and how we care for the earth and other human beings. We hope that our ethics will become part of the greater wine industry's movement toward transparency.
